Demand for dairy products is expected to increase significantly in Ethiopia thanks to population growth, urbanisation, and changing consumption patterns resulting from an expanding middle class.
In the AgroBIG target area, milk production is around 640 litres per household per year (2020). It appears that a significant number of AgroBIG dairy farmers do not sell their milk, but use it for household consumption.
The main constraints in the dairy value chain include poor feed supply and distribution, low quality and reliability of artificial insemination service, shortage of medical supplies and weak health service provision, ineffective market linkage, and weak coordination among value chain actors.
