Demand for poultry products is expected to increase significantly in Ethiopia thanks to population growth, urbanization and changing consumption patterns. Within animal production, this is the most common value chain in the AgroBIG target districts.

Poultry are kept for their meat and eggs, which are consumed or sold. The average number of chickens and eggs per household is 25 and 897 respectively per year (2020).

The main constraints in the poultry value chain include lack of access to veterinary services, quality feed supply, market seasonality, weak market linkage, and poor coordination within the sector.
